1st Day as Legal Adult
Amara Salsabila (INA YES to USA YP 17–18)
Wednesday, 25th of April 2018, I legally turned 18. I didn’t know how to react to this fact. At one hand, I felt happy because it was my birthday. But at the same time, I felt old. Especially when I realized I still have 1 more year of high school to go. Maybe some people think that it’s only 18 but 18 is 2 years away from 20 and that made me feel worse about how old I am now.
Besides the fact that I turned 18th and still looks like elementary school student (which make it even worse), I had a good time that day. Probably, one of my birthday that I will never forget just like my 4th birthday when I had my birthday at school or my 15th birthday when my friends tied me to a power pole then threw flour and eggs to me. Just like other basic Indonesian birthday ever.
The morning at I woke up, my host mom greet me with birthday greetings then she drove me to school just like every other day. It was a great day even though I felt old. My chemistry class and government class sang a birthday song for me. My chemistry teacher said that he won’t give us any homework that day because that was my birthday. I knew he was only joking but at least he didn’t give us any homework that day for real.
Sadly, my friend who always drove me home didn’t come to school that day. So I have to walk home and I wore formal dress plus high heels that day because that was spirit day and the theme of the spirit day was high-class Hollywood. Bad luck me. It’s a 1 mile walk. Around 1,6 km. Not very far but high heels and walking home never go together. But I have no choice.
After a not so long but kind a torturing walk, I arrived home to see a bucket of beautiful yellow flowers with small “Happy Birthday” balloon with it. For a while, I forgot that I just walk 1 mile and my feet was killing me. I changed my clothes because it smells like sweat and sun and that wasn’t birthday worthy. I still have birthday party to go.
6 PM we drove our car to a very special birthday venue ever. Red Robbins. A little background, Red Robin is a fast food chain with the best birthday song ever. I’ve been dreaming about having a birthday party at Red Robin since the day I came to the state.
As always, there were a lot of people there at Red Robin. We have to wait for a while but it didn’t matter because I want my special birthday sundae and birthday song. After we got our table, I ordered a meal that I always have there and my host parents told the waitress that I had my birthday that day so they have to gave me a birthday sundae and birthday song. Also, my host dad ask for the loudest person there to lead the song. The waitress only giggled then she nodded.
We ate our meal, then after we finished our meal, a group of waitress came to our table with my birthday sundae. One of them shout “Someone is having her special 18th birthday today!” really loud. Yup, they heard my dad’s request. They sang the Red Robin birthday song that was really loud, annoying but funny at the same time. We all laughed throughout the song.
I finished my sundae then we drove back home. My host mom already bought cheesecake for us. She also bought a set of unicorn birthday plate and napkins because I love unicorn. My host sister Allison said that she actually planned on making a unicorn cheesecake but she overslept the night before so she didn’t have enough time.
They put candles on my cake (which also shaped like unicorn) and sang a birthday song again. But this time, it was only a regular universal birthday song. I told them that the last time I blew a birthday candle was at my 9th birthday and they didn’t believe in me. We ate the cake with ice cream until all of us felt so full.
My friends whose also there ask me to go to my backyard so we had a little adventure at my backyard. We went up to a tree house which no one stepped a foot there for a long time. And, surprise, surprise, the first thing that we saw there was a dead squirrel that already dried. We try to kick it but it already sticked to the floor. We poke the squirrel with a stick and everything that we saw there. We really had a good time with the squirrel.
We came back home to open gifts. I got new pair of socks, sketchbook and my friend paint me a scenery of Badger mountain, one of the mountain in my city. And the last but not the least, a Sephora gift card. What a gift.
At the end, I closed my first day as a legal adult with huge smile in my face. I might get older but it wasn’t bad at all. I will get old sooner or later even if I don’t want to. It was how I made the best of my life that matter.
