Kamal INA AFS to GER (YP 2017/2018)

In this shore i write this “Unreal Newsletter”, because it’s already the second newsletter. So that’s means soon i will say good bye to my-comfy-puffy-bed in Nuremberg. I don’t know how to say time runs very fast or just walks slowly. Or i still can’t say “Still 4 months or 4 months left”. 17 years growing up in Indonesia, everything more easier there. But now, when Fire-Kingdom attacks, everything changed. No. I’m just kidding.

My senses capture different things. Faces that I see every day, tastes dancing on my tongue, atmosphere caressing my skin, the air that I breath in, opinions and thoughts I heard, even the a new aroma of a house… All was strange, and different…and new. But it’s no longer a strange place, it’s a new home. A new home that takes me to different journey, a new home that introduces me to different ideas, A new home that changes my thoughts about Germany in every aspects.

Yo guys, So I have no idea about what should I write about Germany and since all of you guys dropping me questions like “How is Germany?” “How much do you spend on a daily basis” “Why do I look more handsome?” (eh). So Imma write you guys some stuff that only germans will do, or at least what most of them will do, you all know that, some stuff like their behaviours based on my personal experience. This is that thing that we’re gon slide on, I know you all know what’s going on, check it out!

1. The warm of togetherness in cold

A lot of people think that German is cold (not physically cold when you touch them). But actually, they really give a priority to togetherness. When it comes to Christmas, you can really feel the warmth, because everyone is gather around, from my host bro who is on college in far far away place, until the returnee that ever lived with the Heindel family. We ate our dinner together, having conversation until midnight, and also sing and play the music instrument together. They always want to spend their time with the people whom they love and also matter to them.

2. Celebration is important!

28th of January 2018 became the witness that Kamal’s birthday was celebrated by so many different type of people. At the moment, my 18th birthday was also in the same day with the “AFS Bayern Middle Camp”. I didn’t tell anyone that it was my birthday (I swear! ). But, at midnight, the volunteer invited the exchange students to the hall, and they already prepare an amazing amazing surprise to me, all set with the room decoration, cake, songs, also gift and hug. It wasn’t stop there, when i came home, my host sister who is studying in another town spare her time to come home to make a shoe cake and birthday celebration for me. On Monday, my friends at school and also the teacher gave a lot of wishes, and we also sang together. There, i knew that important days for them are needed to celebrate and make that person feel special on that day.

3. Why they are smart?

It’s no longer a secret that Germany has the educational system that is beyond average, or we can say, the best one. Apparently, their educational system is totally different with Indonesia’s system. Few homework, wearing free clothes, and super rare test. So what makes them have the above average educational system? That’s because they have the understanding that knowledge isn’t only about grade, but it is about the understanding of its concept and practice that will be useful later. The short time of study makes the teacher become super ready on what they’re going to teach on that day. The teacher will often give spontaneous questions to the students about the previous or the upcoming lesson. They won’t take the grade, but the students will be dissapoint or ashamed if they fail to answer. And the teacher will give them advices and directions. So in Germany, it’s not only about grades, but the lesson of someone’s preparation in facing the future, and the practice is really important.

With all the advancing technologies and ideas of “The Germans”, can’t make me say that Germany is better than Indonesia. Neither can I say Indonesia is better than Germany. It is just different. By the way, Drei im Weckla means Three sausages in Bread. Why i put Bread and Sausages for my newsletter title? Because when i write this i miss German Sausages. Yeah. That’s the only reason. Okay, see you in the next newsletter. Servus!
