If life is a staircase, then every single life goal is illustrated as each level of the steps that everyone, including me, wants to reach. One of my steepest ways towards that level is by joining the KL-YES Program. The point is to get out of my comfort zone to gain more insight and knowledge. Now that I am finally living my childhood dream is amazing.

Once me and my friend arrived in Washington, we stayed in a hotel for 2 days for a preparation program.

Two days later, we split up to our placement states. That’s where my journey began. I flew to Louisiana and met my host family. They were so kind and provided me with almost everything. Two days after, is my first day of school, where my life changed 180 degrees. I made new friends, I did a lot of new things i have never done before. Here’s my first day of school picture:

On the first day of school in the United States, I felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. Stepping into the bustling halls of her new school, I was greeted by warm smiles and curious faces. The kindness of my classmates and teachers made the unfamiliar surroundings feel more like a welcoming community. Despite initial language barriers, I found myself embraced by a group of peers who eagerly helped her navigate the school’s routines. As the day unfolded, I discovered the beauty of cultural exchange, sharing stories from Indonesia and learning about American traditions. The genuine friendships formed on that day set the tone for a wholesome and enriching experience throughout my time as an exchange student in the U.S.

One evening I decided to share a taste of his culture with my host family by preparing the traditional dish, “Nasi Goreng.” The kitchen was filled with the enticing aroma of spices as I skillfully cooked the fragrant fried rice. With enthusiasm, I explained each step, sharing stories of family gatherings and the significance of this beloved dish in Indonesia. As the Nasi Goreng sizzled in the pan, the entire household was drawn to the kitchen by the delicious scent. Sitting down together, Me and my host family eagerly tasted the flavorful creation. The shared meal became a heartwarming moment, breaking cultural barriers and fostering a deeper connection between me and my host family through the universal language of food.

In a brightly lit classroom at my school, I stood confidently at the front, ready to share the richness of his culture and country with his high school peers. With a vibrant presentation, I painted a vivid picture of Indonesia’s diverse landscapes, traditions, dishes and customs. My passion for my heritage shone through as I spoke about the colorful festivals, the intricate art forms, and the warm hospitality ingrained in Indonesian culture. My classmates were captivated by the vibrant visuals and engaging anecdotes, gaining a newfound appreciation for the unique tapestry of Indonesia. My presentation not only educated his peers but also fostered a sense of unity, proving that the exchange of knowledge can build bridges of understanding across continents.

In the tapestry of life, I have woven vibrant threads of cultural richness into the fabric of their American experience. Embracing diversity with an open heart, I have not only navigated academic challenges but also fostered lasting connections, leaving an indelible mark on the community. As I continue to reside in the United States, my journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of cross-cultural exchange, reminding me that, in sharing my stories, I contribute to a tapestry that celebrates unity, understanding, and the beauty of a truly interconnected world.
