Tazkia Nurannisa (INA YES to USA YP 17–18)
In this newsletter, I want to tell my story about one event that just happened last month. As a YES Student in United States, I got hosted under AFS-USA placement organization. At first, I still remember that I don’t really understand the function of our placement organization. I start to find outs its function during my stay here and turns out I am so grateful because of my placement organization.
I love everything about AFS, it is truly beyond my imagination of how does my one year experience will be like. I still remember that the only thing that I imagined was only school and family experience. I never really think about my placement organization experience at all.
In my placement organization, I met a lot of amazing people; most of them are ladies. Our president chapter, her name is April, is amazing. She is so sweet and lovely. I met my liaison, scholarship programs leader, and a lot of other amazing people. My AFS-USA placement organization helped me a lot during my first stay in the states. I had a little concern with my host sister, my liaison, and so on and they helped me a lot. I am so grateful because of that. My favorite thing about AFS is that the fact I met a bunch of new friends all over the world. Like legit all over the world, we play together, share our thoughts, and I really feel like I am in one environment where everyone is so open and so warm. We have our Round Table where we meet monthly and share our thoughts and problems with other exchange students and we have our leader for round table. AFS-USA did a very good job to every event that they held. So far I had Welcome Party, Round Table, Christmas Party, Horseback Riding, and one event that I want to talk about in this newsletter is our big event, Phoenix Weekend.
Phoenix Weekend is an event that we did for one week in last January. Basically, the idea of this event is that as AFS students we will gather and we will change our host family for almost one week. The purpose of Phoenix Weekend itself is that so we can kind of give a quick experience for another host family that might possibly want to host an exchange student next year. I really like this event because it is also a way for us to meet a new people and sharing our mind and thoughts with new people.
Not just that, during Phoenix Weekend we also had so much fun with our fellow AFS students. Even though I need to miss school for couple days of course but it was really worth it. The first thing that we did is that we went to Phoenix Art Museum. In that museum, we learned about art, a modern and also a classic art. It was so interesting that we could hang out in a museum and also enjoy the view of Phoenix city.
For me, because I live in a suburban area called Mesa, my area is really widely arranged, near the farm and we almost don’t have any tall buildings. So when I could experience living in a big city like Phoenix I was so happy because I could see so many tall buildings, and also public transportations which in my city we don’t have one.
We went to a memorial park in the middle of the city and had a little lunch party. It was so hot that day but that is fine I mean I live in Arizona so I get used to it. After that, the next amazing trip that we had is we went to Wells Fargo Museum. Wells Fargo is the name of a popular bank in the West. It is like a Spanish bank because Arizona borders right with Mexico so that makes a lot of people speak Spanish, most of them are Mexican and it is really easy to find a Mexican culture here. In that museum we learnt briefly about the history of the culture of Western people. We had a scavenger game in downtown Phoenix and it was so much fun.
