The Story of The “Boring” Sport
Shahnaz Fatinna — KL-YES to USA YP 22/23
“That’s a boring sport”, “There would be no benefit from playing that”. That’s what I always wanted to say about the golf sport. Hi! my name is Shahnaz Fatinna, I am one of the student that got elected to join the exchange program (KL- YES). I was hosted in Minnesota, the coldest out of the coldest state in the winter.
I have an amazing host family and of course 4 cats. I go to school at Armstrong High School which I love A lot. I met tons and tons of people that supported me since day 1 especially my host family. They encouraged me to do the thing that I am scared to try including Golf. I remember the first time I played Golf in the online Nintendo games with my host dad and I would say to my host dad “mmm….maybe I would consider golf as my spring sport, it seems real easy and I don’t need to run much…lol” and guess what I actually did. It starts with indoor dome practice because there are still tons of snow I introduce myself with 16 of them.
AND YESS!! they are so sweet, we played golf inside for a month because of all the snow and cold weather that was happening during that time…and yes, golf is not as easy as I thought and of course NOT AS BORING as I thought. I fell in love with this sport just in a short amount of time. It took me 2 days to actually wanted to do competitively. Golf boring? NO
WAY!! wait and wait and wait we actually has our first tournament I remember one of my coach say “you sure you ready Shahnaz for the tournament? you can practice more if you want to” I’m thinking for about 2 minutes and I said “Yes please cause I do want to know how they are play”.
Day by day we reached our first tournament, we go by the bus and do a karoake all day, I feel less tension because my team mate helps me a lot and if you thought Idid good, you’re wrong I did like real bad at my first time, yet you know what it was worth it. It was more than worth it I learned how to actually play. Next tournament went so fast and I actually improved and I remember the biggest appreciation is when my coach said “Shahnaz that’s hella crazy you did really good I hate you , I hate that I couldn’t work with you anymore and seeing how you improve for next year”.
